Reading Borough Council is encouraging vulnerable residents to protect themselves against flu and COVID-19 this winter by booking their free vaccinations.

Flu season begins in October, but respiratory viruses such as the flu usually peak over the festive and new year period. Getting vaccinated helps prevent serious illness, keeping people healthy for celebrations with loved ones and reducing pressure on the NHS.

Who is eligible for the free vaccine?

Eligible adults are those at higher risk, including:

  • people aged 65 and over
  • those with certain long-term health conditions
  • pregnant women
  • care home residents
  • frontline health and care workers

Lead Councillor for Public Health and Education, Ruth McEwan, said:

“The flu and COVID-19 vaccines play such an important role in ensuring we keep the Reading community strong in the face of winter.

Not only will they protect yourself and your family and friends, but they will also help minimise pressures on our wonderful NHS staff and hospitals which tends to see a huge spike during this period. I urge all eligible residents not to put it off, book your appointment today and arm yourself against the risk of severe illness.”

Why the vaccines are important

Even if you’ve had these vaccines before, immunity fades over time, and new strains emerge. Vaccines are updated every year to offer the best protection. On very rare occasions, people who are vaccinated may still catch a different strain of flu or COVID-19. However, by being vaccinated, symptoms are typically milder and the risk of hospitalisation is reduced.

How to book your vaccines

Appointments are available between 3 October and 20 December 2024.

Eligible residents are encouraged to book both vaccines in one appointment. If this isn't possible, it’s best to get each vaccine as soon as you can rather than waiting.
