Reading’s biggest-ever road resurfacing programme continues with work starting on the next phase of main road improvements. In the next phase of work, 15 sections of major roads will be resurfaced.

This is part of a two-year programme to improve 64 sections of major roads in Reading, with 2025 alone seeing significant improvements.

The £4 million investment in major roads is part of a wider £8 million commitment from Reading Borough Council to improve both main and residential roads. Over 100 residential roads will be resurfaced between February and April 2025.

Improvements made so far

The council’s ongoing efforts to improve highways have already led to:

  • a 39% reduction in pothole reports, from 1,913 in 2021/22 to 1,168 in 2023/24
  • over 700 roads resurfaced since 2019
  • completion of a £9 million, 3 year investment in road improvements, followed by the current £8 million investment
  • the number of residential roads in ‘good’ condition rising from 35% to 85%

The sections of road being resurfaced will require closures to ensure the work can be done safely and efficiently. A temporary ‘no waiting at any time’ traffic order will be in place to prevent parking on the affected roads.

Residents and businesses will be notified in advance, and on-street closure notices will be posted. Signed diversions will be in place, but residents will still have access when it’s safe. Bus diversions will also be implemented.

The contract is being delivered by the Council’s contractor FM Conway as part of a rolling programme. Find out which roads are being resurfaced throughout March and April.

Councillor's response

Councillor Karen Rowland, Lead Councillor for Environmental Services and Community Safety

“We take our residents’ wishes seriously, and we know that a good standard of roads is one of your top priorities, which makes it one of our top priorities too.

Having followed a £9 million road resurfacing investment with this latest £8 million investment, which is making big strides in both main and residential road improvements, it is clear to see that we’re taking residents’ requests seriously and working hard to build a better road network for Reading.

With over 100 residential roads being improved this spring along with these key major routes, residents will see the difference we’re making very soon.”
