Challenges – cars
Reading Borough Council has declared a climate emergency. The government also plans to band that they will ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030. Most vehicle use contributes to the climate crisis. Reading needs to prepare for this change by encouraging residents to use active travel, public transport, or electric vehicles.
To encourage people to change their behaviour and choose sustainable forms of transport we will prioritise other forms of transport over the car.
This will help us to:
- Improve air quality in the borough
- Reduce congestion
- Improve public transport options to make it easier to travel to work, school or local amenities
- Adapt to the growth of the town’s business and housing needs
- Embrace and exploit future technologies
Read more about how we could reach these goals on our cars policies page.
