Car clubs

The issue

Car clubs offer the benefit of access to a car without the cost of owning one. There are currently few car club vehicles in Reading which results in more residents choosing to own a vehicle instead. We know that once someone owns a vehicle, they are more likely to use that to travel than to choose another method, such as walking, cycling or bus.

The scheme

Ways this scheme will affect car drivers include:

  • Reallocation parking spaces for car club vehicles
  • Working with car club providers to bring more vehicles for use in the borough
  • Providing dedicated charging facilities to encourage EVs in car clubs

The outcome

  • Convenient access to a car without ownership
  • Reduced car usage and congestion
  • Improved air quality
  • Improved vehicle occupancy rates
  • Reduced parking pressures
  • Gives a sustainable transport option
