Demand management

The issue   

The high traffic levels in Reading need to be addressed. It is forecast that the problem will get worse as Reading and the surrounding boroughs population expands unless we put in measures to better manage the situation. 

The scheme   

Ways this scheme will affect car drivers may include:  

• Green parking tariffs – charging drivers of highly polluting vehicles more for parking 
• Road space reallocation – this could include cycle or bus lanes, and possibly making existing parking bays electric vehicle charging points 
• Road user charging – charging for low occupancy, highly polluting vehicles 

The outcome   

• Reduced congestion   
• Improved air quality 
• Increased capacity for growth  
• Income stream to help pay for other elements of the transport strategy
