Inner Distribution Road (IDR) multi-modal enhancements – cars

The issue

The IDR has high volumes of traffic which cause congestion which slows journey times as well as making public transport unreliable. This also does not make a nice environment for Active Travel.

Air quality around the IDR is bad due to the large amount of traffic.

The scheme

Ways this scheme will affect car drivers include:

  • Traffic signal upgrades
  • Safety enhancements
  • Use of digital roads, to enable improved management and maintenance
  • Reallocation of road space to safer walking and cycling routes
  • Improved road crossings for pedestrians
  • Bus priority measures
  • Increase in capacity at active travel and public transport pinch points

The outcome

  • Reduced congestion
  • Improved air quality
  • Nicer environment for and increase in walking and cycling levels
  • Improved bus journey time reliability
  • Shift to more use of public transport
