Inner Distribution Road (IDR) multi-modal enhancements – cars
The issue
The IDR has high volumes of traffic which cause congestion which slows journey times as well as making public transport unreliable. This also does not make a nice environment for Active Travel.
Air quality around the IDR is bad due to the large amount of traffic.
The scheme
Ways this scheme will affect car drivers include:
- Traffic signal upgrades
- Safety enhancements
- Use of digital roads, to enable improved management and maintenance
- Reallocation of road space to safer walking and cycling routes
- Improved road crossings for pedestrians
- Bus priority measures
- Increase in capacity at active travel and public transport pinch points
The outcome
- Reduced congestion
- Improved air quality
- Nicer environment for and increase in walking and cycling levels
- Improved bus journey time reliability
- Shift to more use of public transport
