Transport corridor multi-modal enhancements – cars

The issue

These highway corridors are key routes into and out of the town centre. High volumes of traffic cause congestion and there is insufficient space to increase capacity. As well as increasing journey time the congestion makes public transport unreliable and does not provide a nice environment for people to walk or cycle.

Map showing main transport corridors.

The scheme

Ways this scheme will affect car drivers include:

  • Traffic signal upgrades to improve flow
  • Safety enhancements
  • Use of digital roads, to enable improved management and maintenance
  • Improved public transport provision, including giving buses priority
  • Increased capacity at public transport pinch points
  • Improved walking and cycling paths

The outcome

  • Reduced congestion
  • Improved air quality
  • Increase in walking and cycling levels
  • Improved bus journey time reliability
  • Shift to more use of public transport
  • HGVs routed along most appropriate routes
