Mobility as a Service (MaaS)

The issue

Currently each section of a journey on public transport has to be paid for individually to the company travelled with.

This can make using public transport off-putting.

Digital platforms where travellers can see how they can make their full journey, real time information and be able to pay for it in one transaction,  is called Mobility as a Service or (MaaS).  These platforms may also be linked to the provision of new transport services.

The scheme

We intend to work with neighbouring authorities to develop a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) ‘light’ scheme. If a commercial service becomes available, we will work with operators to facilitate the commercial MaaS scheme rather than developing our own.

The service will be available by an app, but there will also be a website and telephone service. This will make the service available to all.

The outcome

  • Improved mobility and access to services
  • More reliable, convenient and cost-effective way to travel sustainably
  • Reduction in private car use and ownership
