Sustainable and safer travel to school
The issue
When parents use their cars to drop off and pick up their children from school it contributes to traffic problems. This makes the air quality around the schools poor. It can also lead to road safety issues.
Being driven to and from school reduced activity in children.
The scheme
Enhancements to walking and cycling in this scheme include:
- Local road closures at school start and finish times (School Streets)
- New and improved pedestrian and cycle crossings
- Reduced vehicle speeds
- Traffic calming measures
- Increased cycle and scooter parking
- Park and Strides – walking and bike groups
- Encourage schools to take part in Modeshift STARS – a national sustainable travel programme
The outcome
- Health benefits of improved air quality and increased activity levels
- Influencing the long-term travel behaviours of children
- Improved road safety
